They said it couldn’t be done. Quite simply novices couldn’t win the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Only a few in the last 40 years had ever tried and they had failed, some tragically.
Dawn Run had been barely out of novice company when she rallied under the mare’s weight allowance to deny Wayward Lad on the line and you had to look back to the brilliant, yet enigmatic, Captain Christy in 1974 to find the last novice to succeed.
