Gary Moore plans to make the six-year-old Goshen run left-handed again at Lingfield’s Winter Million Festival, starting on 20th January 2023. The development comes after Goshen finished in second place at the rescheduled Long Walk Hurdle at Kempton. On Boxing Day, the seven-time hurdles champion lined up at the Sunbury track for his first three-mile attempt. He proved the distance was well within his capabilities by engaging in a thrilling struggle with seasoned staying hurdlers Paisley Park and Champ up the home straight. That now opens up more opportunities for Moore going forward. Still, even though his best performances have come when going anticlockwise, the handler is considering a run in the Weatherbys Hurdle on January 22. Moore stated, “I was pleased with him. He ran nicely (at Kempton). Obviously, I’m a little disappointed he didn’t run a little bit better and win, but it was his first go on the trip. Whether we can improve on that, I don’t know, but at least it gives me a few more options of where to go.”
Gary further noted that Goshen proved he could stay and lost because the winner did better than him. He thought the only opportunity to beat the winning horse, Paisley Park was on a pan-flat track. Moore encounters that Kempton is easy for him also, the winner did not go as fast. However, it was tough, and Goshen ran his best, added Moore.
He further added that he has limitations with Goshen since he can’t run left-handed; however, he is willing to try Lingfield’s Million Weekend.
He was further quoted saying, “My hands are tied slightly, and he can’t really go left-handed, but I think I might give Lingfield’s Million Weekend another go because Jamie said when he dropped him in, he was so settled and giving him no aggravation whatsoever. So we might just give it a go, and he’ll go in the ground – he’ll get his ground there. That will probably be his next objective.”
Moore believes there is little point in trying the bigger obstacles again this season after Goshen failed in his chasing appearance at Ascot earlier in the season. However, he hasn’t entirely ruled it out for the future. “I won’t go over fences again now this far into the season. Whether we go over fences again next year, maybe. But it would have to be on very soft ground, not quick ground.”
