Andy Newton’s ITV Racing Tips at Goodwood & Sandown (Sat 29th Aug): Back My 12/1 NAP and 3/1 NB

As we hot-foot into the weekend you can see Andy Newton’s ITV Horse Racing tips on Saturday, with the action coming from Goodwood and Sandown. 

There are NINE ITV races to take in across the afternoon over the two venues, with the Group Two Celebration Mile (3:10pm) at Goodwood one of the feature contests.

Where last season’s Vintage Stakes winner Zavateri will be trying to get back to winning ways at a track we know he loves.

While at Sandown we’ve the Group 3 Atalanta Stakes (2:40pm) and Solario Stakes (3:30pm) take top billing.

So, let’s get cracking.

Andy Newton’s ITV Goodwood Horse Racing Tips on Saturday 29th August, 2026

 

1:25 GOODWOOD – British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes (Bands B/C/D) (EBF Qual) (GBB/GBBPlus) Cl2 (2yo) 1m ITV4

All Angels will be popular here after two fair opening runs – but the form of the Ed Walker yard is a small worry, while they are also only 1-22 with their juveniles here.

In contrast, the Roger Varian team are in fine fettle so the betting is worth a look for their unraced Roku Nana.

The Andrew Balding stable have the best SR (18%) with their 2yolds from the yards on show, so their Greta Tintin could improve for her opening run (9th) at Kempton.

But another that is sure to attract interest is LILY PINK, who was an eye-catching neck second at Newmarket on debut.

The Balding winner (Zarakova) looked a nice sort that day and with the first two pulling 1 3/4 lengths clear of the rest the form could be okay.

I’ll take Lily Pink to bloom in a tricky ITV Racing opener.

2:00 GOODWOOD – Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 7f ITV4

DARKNESS stormed home as my Final Furlong 25/1 NAP last year in this race – and he’s back for more.

Yes, he’s not won since but as a result has dropped back down the handicap and heads here a pound lower than 12 months ago (87).

Last time he also showed some signs of a return to form too – running on well here (6th) in the Coral Golden Mile.

Plus that form looks good, with the winner Archivist following up recently in the G3 Strensall Stakes at York.

The slight niggle is the draw (15) as all of the last 10 winners came from gates 1-9, but he’s generally held-up anyway so I’m hoping this won’t be an issue.

Of the rest, we’ve also the 2023 winner Rhoscolyn, who is back rated 7lbs lower but has been out of form recently.

At the head of the market Forty Years On and Wokingham silver Completely Random are noted, but I just wonder about the 7f trip for the last-named.

Ghost Mode won well here last time, when wandering over the track a bit. However, that form has taken a few knocks since, with the 2nd Ironwill (runs here too), 6th and 9th all well beaten in their next runs.

But this is a race David O’Meara loves to win (3-6) and he’s also got PELLITORY (as well as Darkness and Rhoscolyn), and I think the former has been given a chance too – up just 4lbs for an easy 3 3/4 length win at Hamilton last time.

I’ll take O’Meara to dominate again and don’t even rule out a 1-2-3 for the yard!

2:35 GOODWOOD – Virgin Bet A Good Bet Handicap (GBBPlus Race) Cl2 (3yo+ 0-105) 1m4f ITV4

TOO SOON was also another of my summer Final Furlong NAPs (more trumpet blowing!) – when winning last time out at Epsom at a nice price.

The Moore camp have resisted running him since, as that win came on soft ground – most likely waiting for the rain.

This has finally arrived in recent days and although it remains to be seen how much will get into the ground, it’s surely going to help.

He’s up 6lbs for that win, but the form looks okay with the 4th Asgard’s Captain winning at the Shergar Cup since.

Warren Fentiman is back in the plate to claim his handy 3lbs too – so I’ll just be hoping the wet stuff continues to fall.

Of the rest, High Degree will, of course, be popular after his easy Pontefract win.

Tony Montana and the only course winner in the field Rathgar are others to respect.

3:10 GOODWOOD – Virgin Bet Celebration Mile Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m ITV4

Zavateri will be a popular pick as he’s out again quickly from when running on to take 5th in the City Of York Stakes last weekend (watch below).

He ran on well that day over 7f so the step back up to a mile today looks a plus and we all know he likes it here at Goodwood – winning the Vintage Stakes in 2025.

The niggle though is I do wonder if his hard 2yold season has knocked a bit out of him and despite only running once over 1m, is still yet to win over this trip.

We’ve also got last season’s Sussex Stakes winner Qirat back at his favoured venue.

While six of the nine runners are also proven course winners – including Seagulls Eleven and the consistent Boiling Point.

But we’ve also got NAQEEB in here, who is 2-1-2 at Goodwood. Yes, he’s got a bit to find on these terms and has to give 6lbs to Zavateri.

However, he was only beaten a short-head to Boiling Point here in May and is 3lbs better off this time.

And last time he certainly wasn’t disgraced when 5th (2 3/4 lengths) behind Zeus Olympios in the Summer Mile at Ascot.

I’ll take this Julie Camacho runner, who has also won on good-to-soft- to hit the frame at worse.

3:45 GOODWOOD – Darley EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (GBB Race) Cl2 (3yo) 1m2f ITV4

Not a race to get too involved in, with many lightly-raced (or unraced) 3yolds, so it’s a guessing game as to how they’ve improved from any opening runs.

Or how forward those having their debuts will be.

But if you do feel the urge to part with some cash a tentative pick of EVENING CALL is suggested.

Only as I think there can only be an upside after this William Haggaas filly finished last of three on debut at Newmarket.

That came only two weeks ago so the fact she’s out again quickly is a good sign and I also feel this step up to 1m2f will help – having been slowly away and looking a tad one-paced the last day.

Aunt Roberta and the Royal runner, Tropical Sands are others to note, but with three runs – the last-named is already a bit exposed.

Andy Newton’s ITV Sandown Horse Racing Tips on Saturday 29th August, 2026

1:40 SANDOWN – Tattersalls £40,000 EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (GBB Race) Cl2 (2yo) 7f ITV4

FLOWER SHOW is chanced to bloom on debut for the Charlie Appleby team, who we know generally have their 2yolds ready first time out.

This Dubawi filly will also have William Buick doing the steering and is backed up with the yard having a decent 31% SR with their juveniles at Sandown.

In contrast, the Andrew Balding team are only 3-47 and the Richard Hannon yard 4-67 with their 2yolds here, so their runners Empress Jingu and Victoria Night have this to overcome.

This race has also been good for horses drawn between 2-4, with 4 of the last 5 winners falling between these gates.

A plus (maybe) for Tall Trees, Flower Show and recent Newmarket second Thi Qar from the Gosden camp.

2:15 SANDOWN – Zyn Frontrunner Finish Handicap Cl2 (3yo+ 0-105) 1m2f ITV4

Flying Frontier won this in 2024 off 93 and is now rated 91, but has a bit to prove recently and has ‘Rodeo’ Luke Morris in the saddle.

Kokbastau had several entries this weekend so the fact his in-form trainer Roger Varian has opted for this is interesting.

He’s on a three-timer after two AW wins and is up 14lbs for the last of those.

King’s Charter for Godolphin is interesting too with Toby Moore taking off 7lbs.

But it’s another ‘King’ – MY LOVE IS KING that gets the nod.

This Gosden runner is having his first run in a handicap here after last seen running 8th in the Hampton Court at Royal Ascot.

He’s been freshened up with 72 days off since and before that run was a close second in a Listed race.

While three runs ago made Maltese Cross pull out all the stops when 2nd at Newbury. The visor goes on here too and an opening mark of 96 looks fair based on his back form.

With 50% of the last 8 winners coming from gate 3, then Gonna Fly is noted too.

Plus, I  must have a small interest on TRIBAL CHIEF, who owes me after fluffing a few starts of late.

It’s interesting connections are upping him to 1m2f here and connections have booked the last jockey to win on him – Sean Levey.

2:50 SANDOWN – BetMGM Atalanta Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m ITV4

SECRET OF LIFE is a horse I’ve been waiting to see run again since she bolted up here last time out.

Yes, that form has taken some knocks since but she was super impressive (2 3/4 lengths) when taking that Listed Coral Distaff.

That was only her third career run (won all three) so you feel there is a lot more to come from this Ralph Beckett Pinatubo filly.

She’s also won on soft ground (Haydock) if more rain comes and holds a G1 Sun Chariot Stakes entry at HQ for later in the season.

There’s a lot to like.

Of the rest, recent Valiant Stakes winner Kon Tiki is sure to be on the premises under Oisin Murphy.

And it was great to see Calendar Girl return with a win in the Dick Hern last time at Haydock, with Pacific Mission in behind.

While this is a race the Cheveley Park team love to win – with 3 successes in the last 10. They run Moon Target, who is the top-rated, but is still to win outside of her opening two Maiden and Novices races.

3:30 SANDOWN – BetMGM Solario Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (2yo) 7f ITV4

With 5 of the last 6 winners coming from gate 5, then Firehorse will be trying to uphold this incredible stat – but recent form suggests this 33/1 shot will do well to carry on this run.

It’s also been a good race for the favourites, with 4 of the last 5 going in – which is a plus is you fancy Godolphin’s runner Rock Montreal.

He was a good winner at Yarmouth on debut and is a rare Godolphin runner for the in-form Roger Varian yard.

Sonic Angel is 2-2 and will be shortlisted by many too after two easy AW wins – the most recent only 10 days ago at Kempton, when dotting up by 5 1/2 lengths.

But the William Muir and Chris Grassick have made no secret they like their runner BREACHER – I think saying he’s got the potential to be one of the best they’ve had.

And considering they looked after the former King George winner Pyledriver, that’s a big statement.

He stayed on well on debut to win at Salisbury and seeing off the 4/6 shot Squadron in the process.

The 4th – a horse called Rafe’s Da Man – has also won since to boost the form and you feel if he was trained by the likes of O’Brien, Appleby or Gosden – he’d he a lot shorter in the betting.

Another win here and the Muir/Grassick team might get a few offers from the big boys.
