Breeders’ Cup 2026: Best UK and Irish runners, trainers and horses to follow at Keeneland

Breeders Cup Runners 2026

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships return to Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st October 2026, bringing together the leading thoroughbreds from Britain, Ireland, Europe, America and beyond for one of the biggest weekends in international horse racing.

The 43rd edition of the championships features 14 Grade 1 races and more than $34 million in purses and awards, with the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic providing Saturday’s headline attraction.

Keeneland has previously staged the meeting in 2015, 2020 and 2022, meaning the historic Kentucky venue will host the Breeders’ Cup for the fourth time in 2026.

British and Irish trainers have enjoyed tremendous success at the meeting, particularly in the turf divisions, and another powerful European contingent will cross the Atlantic hoping to take home championship honours.

Among the leading names are Aidan O’Brien, Charlie Appleby, Andrew Balding and Joseph O’Brien, with several exciting two-year-olds and established Group 1 performers featuring among the potential runners.

O’Brien arrives with a particularly strong team, while Appleby will be looking to add to his remarkable record after Notable Speech’s Mile success in 2025.

Balding and Joseph O’Brien also have horses capable of making their presence felt against the best American opposition.

Most notably Blue Bolt (Balding), Folsom Blues and Commanche Brave (Joseph O’Brien).

How Many Breeders’ Cup Winners Has Aidan O’Brien Had?

Aidan O'Brien has three big St Leger chances

Aidan O’Brien is the joint most successful trainer in Breeders’ Cup history, having recorded 21 winners through the 2025 championships.

Holding the record with US hall-of-famer Bob Baffert.

His landmark victory came at Del Mar in 2025 when Gstaad won the Juvenile Turf, taking O’Brien past the previous record held by D. Wayne Lukas.

O’Brien’s first Breeders’ Cup winner was Johannesburg in the 2001 Juvenile, and he has since developed an outstanding record in the turf races, particularly with his two-year-olds.

His previous winners include High Chaparral, who won the Turf in 2002 and 2003, Found, Highland Reel, Magician, St Nicholas Abbey and Auguste Rodin.

More recently, O’Brien has enjoyed a remarkable run in the Juvenile Turf, winning four consecutive renewals with Victoria Road in 2022, Unquestionable in 2023, Henri Matisse in 2024 and Gstaad in 2025.

He has also won the Breeders’ Cup Mile with Order Of Australia and the Filly & Mare Turf with Tuesday, underlining the versatility of the Ballydoyle operation.

O’Brien’s record makes him one of the key trainers to follow at Keeneland, and his 2026 squad includes several runners with the potential to add to his extraordinary tally.

How Many Breeders’ Cup Winners Has Charlie Appleby Had?

The Trainers

Charlie Appleby has recorded 12 Breeders’ Cup winners through the end of 2025, establishing himself as one of the most successful European trainers at the championships.

His first winner was Outstrip in the 2013 Juvenile Turf, while his most recent success came with Notable Speech in the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Appleby has built a particularly strong record in the Mile, winning it with Space Blues in 2021, Modern Games in 2022, Master Of The Seas in 2023 and Notable Speech in 2025.

He has also enjoyed success in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, with Yibir in 2021 and Rebel’s Romance in 2022 and 2024.

Representing Godolphin, Appleby has become a major rival to O’Brien in the European challenge, and his ability to prepare horses for American conditions makes his runners particularly interesting.

Notable Speech (Breeders’ Cup Mile) is once again one of the headline names to follow, with Appleby hoping to add another championship success to his impressive record.

Main Aidan O’Brien Breeders’ Cup Runners for 2026

Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle team has several exciting contenders across the two days at Keeneland, from the juvenile turf races on Friday to the prestigious middle-distance and mile contests on Saturday.

Sun Goddess – Juvenile Fillies’ Turf

Sun Goddess is one of the leading names in O’Brien’s juvenile team and arrives in Kentucky with an excellent record.

The filly has won six of her eight starts, including her last four outings, and has already demonstrated her ability to compete at the highest level.

Her victory over Libertango in the Cheveley Park Stakes was an important performance, showcasing her speed and finishing ability.

The step up to a mile for the Juvenile Fillies’ Turf presents a different test, but her form makes her one of the most interesting European contenders on Future Stars Friday.

Aidan O’Brien has won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf twice before – with Meditate (2022) and Lake Victoria (2024).

Great Barrier Reef – Juvenile Turf

Great Barrier Reef and Folsom Blues are among the names to follow in the Juvenile Turf, a race that has been a particular strength for the O’Brien family.

Ballydoyle has won the last four renewals, and the stable will be hoping to extend that sequence at Keeneland.

The Juvenile Turf is often one of the most competitive races on the opening day, with European runners facing American horses who are well accustomed to local conditions.

Both colts will need to settle early and finish strongly over the mile if they are to follow in the footsteps of O’Brien’s previous winners.

Great Barrier Reef was the winner of the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf has been a fantastic event for O’Brien too – winning the prize a record eight times.

With his first in 2011 (Wrote) and most recent in 2025 (Gstaad).

Ryan Moore has ridden seven of O’Brien’s wins in this Breeders’ Cup race.

Diamond Necklace and Benvenuto Cellini – Breeders’ Cup Turf

Benvenuto Cellini and Diamond Necklace give O’Brien potential options in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, one of the most prestigious races on the programme.

Diamond Necklace is a four-time Group 1 winner who has established herself among the leading middle-distance fillies in Europe.

Although her latest defeats have interrupted her winning sequence, her class and proven ability at the highest level make her an important contender.

The daughter of St Mark’s Basilica will be racing outside Europe for the first time, so adapting to Keeneland and the demands of American racing will be crucial.

Aidan O’Brien is the winning-most trainer in Breeders’ Cup Turf history with seven wins.

His first came back in 2002 with High Chaparral and most recent in 2023 with Epsom Derby winner Auguste Rodin.

Benvenuto Cellini, meanwhile, brings strong middle-distance credentials after winning the Irish Derby.

His presence would give Ballydoyle another high-class option in a race that O’Brien has won a record seven times.

Both horses would face a formidable international field, but O’Brien’s record in the Turf means his runners deserve close attention.

Precise – Filly & Mare Turf

Precise is another O’Brien-trained filly to watch in the Filly & Mare Turf.

She has already demonstrated considerable class and could be suited by the demands of the race, which attracts leading fillies and mares from Europe and North America.

The key will be whether she can reproduce her best form against experienced international rivals on the Keeneland turf.

O’Brien’s only Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf win came in 2022 with Tuesday.

True Love – Breeders’ Cup Mile

True Love is among the Ballydoyle names to follow in the Mile, where O’Brien could face a formidable challenge from Charlie Appleby’s defending champion, Notable Speech.

The Mile is one of the most competitive races of the weekend, bringing together high-class milers with different racing styles and preparation routes.

True Love would need to show that she can cope with the pace and intensity of the American race, but O’Brien’s record in the championship makes his runners difficult to dismiss.

She was last seen winning the Prix De La Foret at Longchamp on Arc weekend.

Aidan O’Brien’s only Breeders’ Cup Mile win came with Order Of Australia in 2020.

Other Leading British and Irish Runners to Follow

Charlie Appleby – Notable Speech and Godolphin’s Challenge

Notable Speech is the defending Breeders’ Cup Mile champion and one of the biggest names in the European challenge.

Appleby has won the Mile four times, and Notable Speech’s victory in 2025 continued that exceptional record.

His ability to settle and deliver a strong finish makes him a major contender once again, although repeating a Breeders’ Cup victory is never straightforward.

Appleby’s wider team will also be worth monitoring across the turf races as Godolphin seeks further championship success.

Andrew Balding – Blue Bolt

Andrew Balding is another leading British trainer with a runner to follow in Blue Bolt.

The filly has enjoyed an excellent season, including a Group 1 victory in the Sun Chariot Stakes, and is among the European names associated with the Filly & Mare Turf.

The American race would present a different challenge, particularly if the pace is strong from the outset.

Balding has built a reputation for preparing horses to compete internationally, and Blue Bolt would be an interesting contender if she takes her place in the final field.

Blue Bolt would be looking to provide Balding with a very first Breeders’ Cup win.

Joseph O’Brien – Folsom Blues and the Irish Challenge

Joseph O’Brien has also become an important figure on the international stage and will be looking to add to his Breeders’ Cup success.

His first victory came with Iridessa in the 2019 Filly & Mare Turf, while his wider operation continues to produce horses capable of competing at the highest level.

Folsom Blues is one of the names to watch in the Juvenile Turf discussion, adding to the strength of the Irish challenge.

The European trainers will face strong opposition from American horses who are particularly well suited to their home tracks, but the turf races provide an excellent opportunity for the visitors.

Comanche Brave – Turf Sprint

Comanche Brave is another notable name in the wider Irish challenge, with his sprinting ability making him a potential contender for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.

His Group 1 victories in the July Cup and Flying Five Stakes underline his class and speed.

The Turf Sprint is a specialist test, with early positioning and the ability to maintain a high cruising speed particularly important.

He is trained by Donnacha O’Brien rather than Aidan, but his participation would add another interesting dimension to the Irish challenge.

Libertango – Juvenile Turf Sprint

Libertango is another name to follow in the juvenile races after facing Sun Goddess in the Cheveley Park Stakes.

He is trained by George Boughey rather than Aidan O’Brien and is associated with the Juvenile Turf Sprint.

His speed makes the shorter race a natural target, and he will be hoping to produce his best form against the American juveniles.

Breeders’ Cup 2026 Verdict: Can the British and Irish Trainers Dominate?

The British and Irish challenge at Keeneland is once again led by some of the biggest names in European racing.

Aidan O’Brien has an exceptional record at the meeting, with 21 winners, while Charlie Appleby has built an outstanding reputation through his success in the Mile and Turf.

Sun Goddess is one of the most exciting juvenile fillies to follow, while Diamond Necklace and Benvenuto Cellini provide O’Brien with potential contenders for the prestigious Turf.

Notable Speech will be looking to defend his Mile crown for Appleby, while Andrew Balding and Joseph O’Brien add further depth to the European challenge.

The American opposition will be formidable, particularly on dirt, but the turf races provide a realistic opportunity for the visitors to shine.

With two days of championship racing at Keeneland, the 2026 Breeders’ Cup promises another fascinating battle between Europe and America, and the leading British and Irish trainers will be determined to return home with more international honours.
