Rolf Johnson reflects on the life and times of formbook genius Phil Bull

The Racing Post ran a series on professional gamblers – “Masters of Betting”.
Phil Bull was the only one not ‘active’ – he died in 1989.
He was wont to address others - fellow gamblers, employees, the great and the good - as “Brother”: put that down to Phil’s Marxist leanings (Karl Marx gambled, not that successfully, on the Stock Exchange).
It wasn’t necessarily a term of endearment either.
Phil was liberal with his dreaded Timeform ‘squiggle’ for some ‘brothers’.
