Far Above forced to retire

Trainer James Tate says he is “gutted” after making the call to retire promising sprinter Far Above.

Far Above had only raced five times, winning four, including the Listed Prix Kistena last year, but his latest victory, on his seasonal reappearance on Saturday, proved to be the end of his short career.

The four-year-old showed a fine turn of speed to land the Group 3 Palace House Stakes at – for which he was bumped up 12lb to a rating of 111, but sadly suffered an injury in the race.

Tate could not hide his dismay but accepted it was the right call to retire him.

“We're gutted,” Tate said. “I mean some of the work he did was astounding and on Saturday at Newmarket people got to see just a little bit of that.

“PJ said he felt him take a wrong step running down the hill and unfortunately he's injured a sesamoid in a front leg. It's only a small injury but it's in a bad place and it's the right thing for the horse to pull stumps.”
