Broken Stones has improved leaps and bounds ahead of the July Stakes at Newmarket, says Adam Ryan, assistant to trainer Kevin Ryan.
The two-year-old made his debut at York in May and his performance was arguably the most impressive on the day.
He was at the back of the field under Jamie Spencer and although the colt took a while to get going, he quickened up smartly in the closing stages to win by one-and-a-half lengths.
The son of Requinto was then set for a run in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot but connections pulled him out due to the soft ground at the Berkshire circuit.
With fast conditions in his favour at Newmarket for the three-day July Cup meeting, Broken Stones is set to run in the July Stakes on Thursday.
He'll face a decent field that includes Windsor Castle Stakes winner Ardad and Coventry runner-up Mehmas, but Ryan insists Broken Stones has matured sufficiently and will be competitive.
He exclusively told Beforetheoff.com: “The ground was just not right at Ascot and you have to be 100% sure when running there.
“Missing the race will not be a problem at all and he has been working well at home, it also gave him a couple more weeks to mature which is always good with two-year-olds.
“Obviously it looks a good race and both Ardad and Mehmas were impressive at Ascot but we are very happy with Broken Stones. He was impressive on debut and will have learnt a lot for the run and has improved from it.”
