Glorious Goodwood Horse Racing Tips: Saturday 1st August, 2026

13:50 – Highclere Castle Gin Summer Handicap (1m 6f)

VALEDICTORY has been ticking along beautifully this season. He comes here chasing a hat-trick, and a modest 3lb rise for his latest win looks very fair.

Crucially, he’s already proved he handles this track after scoring here over a mile and a half two starts back.

With just seven career runs under his belt (and three wins), there should still be plenty left in the locker. William Buick-who was on board last time out-keeps the ride.

Of the remainder, ALIGN THE STARS looks well worth an interest.

Fresh off a win in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle, Charlie Johnston’s runner is up 4lbs here.

That victory came on the All-Weather, but he’s just as effective on the turf.

In fact, he’s a proven course-and-distance winner after landing this exact race in 2024, and he returns just 2lbs higher this time around.

The Johnston stable boasts a brilliant record in this contest (winning 7 of the last 23 renewals), and while he finished behind Valedictory here back in May, he’s 5lbs better off at the weights today.

Sing Us A Song, Aeronautic, and Hopewell Rock will all have their supporters, but don’t overlook Small Fry either.

Joseph O’Brien has booked Oisin Murphy for the mount, and the horse wasn’t disgraced when 6th in the Ascot Stakes last month-beaten just 3½ lengths.

14:25 – Coral Glorious Stakes (Group 3) (1m 4f)

I’m giving the nod to OPPORTUNITY over Al Aasy, who is aiming to win this race for a third time.

Both are trained by William Haggas, so the yard will know exactly where they stand with the pair.

The official ratings have Al Aasy just 4lbs superior on level weights, but last year’s hero is now a nine-year-old.

While he won nicely at Beverley last time and clearly still retains his passion for the game, I’m keen to side with the fresher legs.

Opportunity is only four and looks progressive after back-to-back wins-most recently showing real grit to land the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He’s been hit with a 10lb rise and steps up into Group 3 company today, so more is certainly required.

However, I don’t think we’ve seen the absolute ceiling for this Frankel colt just yet.

As for the rest, top-rated Ghostwriter (115) has plenty to prove after trailing home 12th in the Wolferton Stakes. Enfjaar looks best equipped to challenge, especially with Roger Varian’s stable in such fine form.

15:00 – Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2) (1m 6f)

WAARDAH looks the safest bet to defend her crown in what isn’t the strongest edition of this Group 2.

She landed this race as a three-year-old 12 months ago, edging out Danielle by ¾ of a length while receiving 10lbs.

They meet on level terms this time, so you can certainly build a case for the runner-up, but I expect the Owen Burrows runner to have progressed enough from three to four to double up.

She was last seen pushing the high-class Estrange to 1½ lengths at Carlisle-a form line that took a major boost when Estrange went on to win the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes in Ireland.

Course winner Santorini Star and Consent (who beat the Haggas horse in France last season) are worth monitoring, while Cheshire Oaks winner Amelia Earhart also lines up.

However, she’s been well beaten in both the English and Irish Oaks since, and it’s worth noting that Aidan O’Brien has surprisingly never won this race.

15:35 – Coral Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) (6f)

TWO TRIBES bolted up in the Stewards’ Cup last season by 2¼ lengths, and he looks set for another massive run.

He’s 7lbs higher than last year, but I put him up at 28/1 in the International Stakes at Ascot last week and he ran an absolute blinder to finish 2nd.

It’s slightly frustrating that his odds have trimmed as a result, but we know he’s in peak form and loves this track.

Trends-wise, this race heavily favors the younger horses-24 of the last 28 winners were aged between 4 and 6, with only one winner aged 7+ since 1996.

That poses a real stat-check for the older generation, including Annaf (7), Mitbaahy (7), and 2024 winner Get It (8).

Additionally, eight of the last nine winners came from stalls 15 or higher, and trainer David O’Meara has won two of the last six renewals.

Beyond the main pick, I’m drawn to a pair of ‘F’s: FANDOM and FLASH HARRY.

Richard Hannon’s Fandom was staying on strongly for 3rd over 5f at Ascot last time out, so stepping back up to 6f is a massive plus.

(The 5th from that race, Glamorous Breeze, ran well here earlier in the week, adding strength to the form).

Meanwhile, the Clive Cox-trained Flash Harry is a proven course-and-distance winner with just eight career starts.

He was 15th in the Wokingham last time, but drops 2lbs here, and Goodwood should suit him far better. With Jack Nicholls taking off a valuable 5lbs, there’s plenty to like.

16:10 – Phase Eight Handicap (7f)

WE’RE GOOSERS looks like the one to back in the ITV finale-a dynamic 7f handicap.

I was taken by his dominant performance at Newmarket in May, where he bolted home by 9½ lengths.

He flopped as the beaten favorite in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot next time out, but several key factors have changed since then: he’s been gelded, and he drops back to 7f-his absolute ideal distance, where his record reads an impressive 2-2-1-1.

Having Oisin Murphy back in the saddle for a third straight ride is the cherry on top. Expect him to deliver.

Ghost Mode is another major player for Andrew Balding.

He is similarly well-suited to this 7f trip (3-2-1-2), and both fit the key trends for this race-all of the last 14 winners carried 9-4 or less, while the last nine winners were drawn in stalls 1 through 9.

Karl Burke’s Naval Light can round out the places as he chases a hat-trick, with Jack Nicholls claiming a handy 3lbs.
