Kelly set for spell out

Jockey Tony Kelly is set for a spell away from after undergoing back surgery following a fall at on .

Kelly, who finished second at on his previous outing, was riding in the Jigsaw Sports Branding Handicap Chase in Nottinghamshire when he was unseated by the Rebecca Menzies-trained Captain Mowbray three fences from home.


The jockey was sent to the Queen's Medical Centre and, after further tests, it was confirmed he had fractured his T7 vertebra in the centre of his back.


Menzies gave an update on the situation of Kelly and revealed the rider, who is in his eighth season riding, has been undergoing back surgery to resolve the problem.


“I went to see him last night. He's flat on his back and frustrated but he's very, very lucky as it could have been much worse,” she was quoted as saying by Racing Post. “A plate and rods are being put in to stabilise his back.


“He's got feeling and movement, so it's very fixable. It was quite a simple fall and he wasn't knocked out but he landed right on his back. He's in the best place.”
