Andy Newton’s ITV Doncaster Horse Racing Tips On Sunday

 

1:25 DONCASTER Land Of Lights Festival At Gullivers Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-90) 5f ITV

MAELSTROM has been in fine fettle recently and with his last two wins coming by just a head and a neck – then the handicapper might be finding it hard to get to grips with him.

He’s nudged up just 3lbs more here for that last Ascot win and Jack Dace is riding again to claim a handy 5lbs.

The Stuart Williams yard are also coming into the weekend in good form and draw 1 looks fine.

Of the others, after a couple of silvers Hypnotised for the Harry Charlton yard will be popular too.

While the Crisford yard have a top 21% SR with their runners at Donny and with Oisin Murphy riding Adrestia.

She sports the first-time cheekpieces too which could help spark her back to life after some below-par efforts.

The other pick though is VENTURE CAPITAL, who actually won this race in 2024.

He’s still with the Kevin Ryan yard and is back rated 9lbs lower than 2 years ago. A recent 4th at Ripon – only beaten 3 lengths – was a sign he could also be running back into form.

1:55 DONCASTER Betfred ‘The Classic Bookmaker’ Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 6½f ITV

OLIVER SHOW is chanced here in a very open sprint handicap.

This George Boughey runner comes from gate 9 and with 80% of the last 10 winners coming from stalls 4-9 this is a plus.

He’s probably most famous for running a close second in the 2025 Lincoln here and hasn’t won in 15.

But is down to a mark of 91, which is 4lbs lower than his Lincoln silver and last time returned to form with a good second at Goodwood.

The winner of that race – Inspired – has since franked the form to win again and it’s interesting the first-time visor is on today too.

Boughey also has the consistent Asuka in the race, while Wokingham Stakes runner-up Completely Random shouldn’t be far away, but might just be in the handicapper’s grip off 104.

So, going back to the key draw stat – LAKERS in gate 5 is the second pick here.

This Ammo Racing 4yold has gate 5 and heads here off a good 3rd (of 10) at Goodwood to Flash Harry and gets in off the same rating.

2:30 DONCASTER Betfred City Of Doncaster Handicap Cl2 (3yo 0-100) 7f ITV

WECHAAD can add to the fair record the Roger Varian yard has in this race – winning the pot twice since 2017.

This 3yold has been running well of late, without winning. Including a 7th (of 30) in the Britannia and then 3rd at Newmarket.

Both these runs came over a mile but his only career win was over this 7f trip – oh, and that also came here at Donny.

Any give underfoot is okay too and Varian is also 10-47 (21%) with his 3yolds on Town Moor.

Another yard that do well with this age group at this track is James Fanshawe (27%) – so their runner Lion Of Mali is respected too.

Saffie Osborne rides and he comes here in winning form after getting his head in front at Newbury.

Finally, Ironwill is noted too for the in-form Stuart Williams yard from gate 6 – with 3 of the last 9 winners coming from this berth.

He was 4th last time to the improving Forty Years On, who goes in the next race.

3:05 DONCASTER Japan Racing Association Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo+) 7f ITV

FOURTY YEARS ON is a filly in the form of her life and looks well worth sticking with.

She heads here having won her last two and last time at Goodwood travelled superbly well into the race to win with ease by 2 lengths (if could have been more).

The 6th Darkness has since run well to be second last weekend.

While Forty Years On’s win before that at Newbury has also been boosted by the 2nd Brian bolting up last Saturday too.

This George Scott runner is up another 9lbs here, but not into a G3 that hike (from a handicapper’s point of view) doesn’t really com into play.

It’s just if she’s good enough to make the leap up in class – I think she is.

Touleen sets a fair standard though – having been second in the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot to Precise.

But despite having ability she’s not the most reliable for me – and is still to win outside of Novice/Maiden company.

1000 Guineas 4th The Prettiest Star can do best of the rest, but is another that hasn’t really kicked on since that promising effort.

3:40 DONCASTER Betfred Mallard Handicap (GBBPlus Race) Cl2 (3yo+ 0-105) 1m6½f ITV

ERNST BLOFELD is a tentative pick in a race with a lot of question mark over most of the runners.

This Wathnan Racing 4yold heads here off two 5th-place finishes and before that was 7th in the Copper Horse Stakes at Royal Ascot over this trip.

He got a bit hampered that day too and is a pound lower, and also kept on well despite being beaten 7 lengths last time (5th of 16).

Yes, he’s still to win on the grass, with both his wins coming on the AW – but I just think the return to his longer trip is worth another crack and in a race that most would have a squeak he at least heads here in fair form.

Valedictory is a horse I like too after a good spell a few months ago in a race that’s thrown up bundles of winners. But has lost his way a bit recently so connections are reaching for the first-time visor to try and help him rediscover his form.

The consistent Say What You See will be popular with all Catchphrase fans – and Dancing In Paris and Arqoob could both be over-priced considering they are the only two last-time out winners in the line-up.
