Ben Morgan’s Glorious Goodwood 2026 tips – Day 4 & 5 – Friday frenzy to make or break the week

Day 4

1.50 – St looks heavenly in stamina sapping opener

ST MAWES has been on the shortlist all week for this race and although Tom Marquand’s presence aboard George Scott’s new recruit initially caught my attention, I have no problems with Ray Dawson coming in to ride.

An improver for Emma Lavelle when under her care, he seemed to appreciate a real test of stamina, always doing his best work at the finish in 2 mile races.

Now faced with an extra half a mile he threatens to eek out a little bit more improvement which might just see him get his head back in front after a couple of narrow misses recently.

He boasts good course form and a mark of 81 just looks far too lenient in this race. One of the bets of the week for me.

3.00 – Hawk looks sure to improve in Golden Mile

Last year’s Rhoscolyn managed to put behind a poor run in the 7f handicap earlier in the week when winning this race easily last year and I fancy HAWKSBILL to go close to repeating that feat.

Although he didn’t run poorly in that race, he looked in need for a mile for sure as his legs just couldn’t go fast enough in the final couple of furlongs.

A crucial low draw has been secured, which seems almost a necessity here, and I can see him running a lot better than 28/1.

3.35 – Old adversaries reoppose in rumble in the Jungle

A lot of these sprinters reoppose each other again here and I get the feeling with the 5f division this year that just about any of them could win this.

I’m sticking with two horses I have put up a lot recently in the shape of last year’s winner, JM JUNGLE and AMERICAN AFFAIR.

Jm Jungle did us proud in this race last year and all his best runs have come over a fast 5f so I can see no reason why he won’t give his running again.

He ran a good race at York last time out only just getting hustled out of it late on and I anticipate an improved showing from there which must put him in with a right chance.

American Affair endured a poor passage in that same York race where he was stuck out on the wing throughout but still only finished a couple of lengths off the winner.

Granted a better tow into the race here I can see a much better showing and again another who looks sure to outrun his odds. 

4.10 – Haatem to redeem himself back at Goodwood

HAATEM endured a horror passage up the Royal Ascot straight in the Wolferton when seemingly full of running.

James Doyle had little choice but to ease him down in the end, hence his form figures looking a little egg like recently.

However, back in a more conventional race with a lot less runners I think he can show his class in a Conditions race which looks favourably upon him in terms of weight and ratings.

Day 5

3.35 – Spencer Special the order of the day in Stewards Cup

I’m hoping for a Jamie Spencer special in the feature handicap on Saturday, the Stewards Cup.

A race where there are usually hard luck stories a plenty, you can find one who sneaks through on the rail and thrusts home late to reward backers with an exhilarating finish.

I think MITBAAHY will be aiming for something along those lines as he is a hold up performer but one who is in rude health at present and has been operating in Group company.

Connections have enjoyed plenty of success here at Goodwood and know what it takes to ready one for this race.

Spencer looks a confident booking and I would love it if he could steer this one home in front.

One at a similar sort of price but on the other side of the track is ANNAF.

He might just prefer it a little softer but a return to 6f will definitely help him as he is now lurking on a mark that he can do some damage off.

He was an eye catcher over 5f the last day but I anticipate him to drift come the off given his ‘exposed’ profile.

However, I do think he can run well here and if able to get a good tow into the race, he will be finishing fast.
