The horse racing world has been left shocked after legendary jockey Frankie Dettori was taken to hospital following a serious road traffic accident in Newmarket on Wednesday evening.
Dettori, 55, was involved in the crash at British racing’s headquarters after the vehicle he was travelling in was reportedly hit on its rear passenger side by another car. The impact caused the vehicle to spin before overturning.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with paramedics treating the former champion jockey at the scene before taking him to a nearby hospital for further assessment.
Frankie Dettori Suffers Broken Thumb and Ribs, Say Doctors
Dettori’s management company, H Talent Management, has confirmed the Italian suffered several broken ribs as well as a broken thumb.
He remains in hospital under observation while doctors carry out additional tests to determine whether he sustained any further injuries.
In a statement released on his behalf, Dettori expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in his care.
“Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him. His focus is now on resting and recovering. H Talent Management respectfully asks that Frankie’s privacy is respected at this time. No further comment will be made until there is a meaningful update.”
The accident comes only months after one of the most celebrated careers in horse racing came to an end. Dettori officially retired in February 2026 after extending his farewell tour to include successful spells riding in both the United States and Brazil.
His final appearance on a British racecourse remains etched in the memory, signing off in perfect fashion aboard King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes at Ascot before receiving an emotional farewell from racegoers.
Although retired from full-time riding, Dettori had already agreed to return to the saddle later this year in the annual Legends Charity Race at Doncaster during the St Leger Festival.
That race is scheduled for Friday, September 11, 2026, but whether he will be fit enough to take part is now uncertain as he begins what is expected to be a lengthy recovery.
Newmarket Brings Back Painful Memories for Frankie Dettori
For many racing fans, news of the latest accident immediately brought back memories of the terrifying plane crash that almost claimed Dettori’s life more than 25 years ago.
On 1 June 2000, the Italian was travelling from Newmarket to Goodwood alongside fellow jockey Ray Cochrane and pilot Patrick Mackey when their light aircraft crashed just moments after take-off.
The Piper Seneca failed to climb away safely, struck an embankment at Devil’s Dyke and erupted into flames, leaving the racing community fearing the worst.
Patrick Mackey Lost His Life in the Devastating Plane Crash
While Dettori and Cochrane somehow escaped the wreckage, pilot Patrick Mackey tragically lost his life.
Dettori suffered a broken ankle along with facial injuries and other fractures that kept him off the track for several months.
Despite suffering burns himself, Cochrane managed to pull Dettori clear before attempting to rescue Mackey.
Sadly, the flames had already taken hold, making it impossible to reach the pilot. His bravery was later recognised with the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery.
Dettori has often spoken about how close he came to losing his life that day, admitting he genuinely believed the crash would be his last moments.
The experience transformed his outlook forever. He has frequently said it made him appreciate his family more, enjoy every day in the saddle and never take success for granted again.
His comeback later that same year became one of racing’s most inspiring stories.
Dettori returned to the weighing room, resumed his place among the sport’s elite and went on to add countless Group 1 victories, Classic successes and Royal Ascot winners to an already glittering career.
Although investigators from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch were unable to pinpoint one definitive cause of the crash, they concluded the aircraft failed to gain sufficient height after take-off before striking the embankment.
Now, more than a quarter of a century later, Newmarket has once again become the setting for a frightening chapter in Frankie Dettori’s remarkable story.
Thankfully, this time the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and the racing world will be hoping one of its greatest-ever riders makes a full and speedy recovery.
Frankie Dettori’s New Role as Amo Racing Advisor

After retiring from race-riding in February 2026, Frankie Dettori wasted little time stepping back into the sport, taking up a new role as an advisor to Amo Racing.
Working closely with owner Kia Joorabchian, Dettori’s responsibilities include mentoring jockeys, helping identify and assess emerging talent, offering advice on race planning and bloodstock, and supporting the operation’s growing international ambitions.
With decades of experience at the very highest level of the sport, Dettori brings invaluable knowledge to one of racing’s most ambitious ownership teams.
The role also allows the former champion jockey to remain heavily involved in top-level Flat racing while leaving behind the day-to-day demands of life in the saddle.
