Andy Newton's York Horse Racing Tips

See Andy Newton’s York Horse Racing tips on Thursday 20th August – day TWO of the Ebor Festival.

Having fired in Air Force One (13/2) and Maltese Cross (9/4) on Wednesday.

There are five more ITV races to take in on Thursday, as the 2026 York Ebor Festival continues.

These include the Group One Yorkshire Oaks (3:35pm) that will see the return of recent King George winner Kalpana.

On the day we also get a chance to see some of the stars of the future in the Lowther Stakes (1:50pm).

So, let’s get cracking.

Andy Newton’s Quickfire York Horse Racing Tips: Thursday 20th August, 2026:

  • 1:50pm: LIVENKA (e/w)
  • 2:25pm: SUN GODDESS
  • 3:00pm: BLUE BROTHER
  • 3:35pm: KALPANA
  • 4:10pm: A LA PROCHAINE

1:50pm Sky Bet Lowther Stakes Group 2 2yo f £250,000 6f ITV1

Albany Stakes winner Libertango will be popular despite failing to follow up at Newmarket next time in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.

While Star Of State is progressing nicely after winning at Leopardstown maiden well last month.

But a horse that beat Star Of State at Fairyhouse – LIVENKA – looks the better value, having also won next time at Naas.

Yes, this is a step up in grade but she’s going the right way too and could be double the price of the two market principles.

I also think Wild Blossom, who bounced back at Goodwood last time after running below-par at Ascot in June.

While Windsor Castle 2nd Moonrise has done little wrong since by winning the Princess Margaret Japan Cup at Ascot last month.

🥇LIVENKA (e/w)
🥈Libertango
🥉Star Of State

2:25pm Harry’s Half Million by Goffs Stakes Handicap 2yo £500,000 6f ITV1

SUN GODDESS have shone this season and it will take a good one to eclipse her again here.

She ran second to Libertango at Royal Ascot in June in the Albany Stakes and has kicked on since by winning at the Curragh twice.

The last came with an easy success in the Phoenix Stakes and that’s the best form on show here.

Of the rest, I’ve been impressed with the way the David & Nicola Barron-trained Quillan has been winning this season and would probably be shorter if trained by one of the powerhouse.

While Tokaido has done brilliant for the Amy Murphy yard this season – winning his last four.

And the unbeaten Satellite Of Love has to be respected for the Clive Cox yard, who have won the last THREE renewals of this race.

🥇SUN GODDESS
🥈Satellite Of Love
🥉Quillan

3:00pm Sir Kevin Sinfield 7 in 7 Grand Finale Stakes Heritage Handicap 3+ £150,000 1m ITV1

Bullet Point won this race last season and is back rated a pound higher.

While Cerulean Bay was runner-up 12 months ago but returns rated 12lbs higher.

Centigrade is also eye-catching into a handicap for the first time on a mark.

Plus, Buckingham Palace Stakes winner Mezcala and recent York winner The Lost King are others to note.

However, these are both drawn high and I’m happy to take a chance on something lower – backed up with 80% of the last 10 winners coming from gates 8 or lower.

Which is why BLUE BROTHER is interesting for the Wathnan team.

He was 4th to Mezcala at Royal Ascot but is now 4lbs better off, while heads here off just two runs since being gelded.

He’s only had 14 career runs, but despite recent form not showing it – has hit the top two in 50% of those runs (2 wins).

James Doyle rides.

🥇BLUE BROTHER
🥈Mezcala
🥉Bullet Point

3:35pm Yorkshire Oaks Group 1 3+ f&m £600,000 1m 4f ITV1

KALPANA has had a top season so far and hopefully she’s not finished yet.

This Andrew Balding runner peaked with a win in the King George last time out – powering away to beat Calandagan by 1 1/2 lengths.

She’s back racing against her own sex here and so doesn’t get any weight from the others – and actually has to give away pound to the 3yolds in the race.

But she’s still rated 125 and clear of the next best Minnie Hauk, who was well back in 8th in the King George last time out.

Irish raider Johanna Walsh was a close second in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and has since boosted that form to win the G1 Irish Oaks at the Curragh – she rated the biggest threat to Kalpana.

Plus also gets a handy 9lbs off the Juddmonte horse.

Of the rest, Tattycoram can’t be ruled out after good wins at Goodwood and Newmarket recently, with the last of those franked since by Tiffany (2nd) winning on her next start.

🥇KALPANA
🥈Johanna Walsh
🥉Tattycoram

4:10pm British EBF & Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes Listed 3+yolds £100,000 1m 4f ITV1

The last 10 winners of this race have been drawn 10 or lower which might be seen as a negative for the Gosden runner Without Prejudice (gate 13).

Gosden also has Morrophore in the race and Ryan Moore stands out in the saddle. She was a good winner last time on the AW at Lingfield and deserves her chance in this higher grade.

A LA PROCHAINE was 4th in the Epsom Oaks last time and 3rd before that in the Cheshire Oaks – with only three career runs she has to go well for me from stall 2 – despite the Oaks this year not looking the strongest renewal.

I just feel she’s got the most potential.

Of the rest, I was impressed with Prizeland winning at Kempton earlier this season but she’s not quite backed that up in races since.

While Rhapsody is the only course winner in the field and has to be respected for the Haggas yard who won this in 2023.

🥇A LA PROCHAINE
🥈Rhapsody
🥉Morrophore
