Day one of the five-day Qatar Festival kicks off on Tuesday, July 28th, featuring the iconic Group One Goodwood Cup.

The ITV Racing team has five terrestrial races lined up for us, starting right at 1:50pm.

Glorious Goodwood Horse Racing Tips On Tuesday 28th July, 2026

1:50: Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap (1m2f) – ITV

QUAI DE BETHUNE (e/w) looks genuinely interesting here after having plenty of excuses in his last couple of starts.

Two runs back at Epsom was his seasonal reappearance, so he was always bound to need the outing. Even so, he travelled beautifully into the race before fitness simply caught up with him.

Then came the John Smith’s Cup at York-he looked poised to win, only to get completely stopped in his tracks against the inside rail. He would have finished miles better than 13th of 22 with a clear run.

The handicapper has eased last year’s Royal Ascot winner by 3lbs for that effort, leaving him just 4lbs higher than his Golden Gates victory last summer.

Draw-wise, gate 12 is ideal, especially considering 14 of the last 20 winners came from stall 9 or higher.

As for the danger, Wave Rider brings some solid form over from Bahrain. He’s been freshened up since a wind operation and should go well under Oisin Murphy.

Two-time course winner Rathgar also warrants respect-he beat Sallaal earlier in the campaign, and that form has been repeatedly boosted since.

2:25: Coral Vintage Stakes (Group 2) (7f) – ITV

HAFFNER gets the nod here to hand Aidan O’Brien a fourth Vintage Stakes title in the last 14 years.

This Justify colt couldn’t have impressed much more when winning a hot Newmarket Maiden last time out, leaving some well-fancied types trailing behind him-including Subscription in 4th.

That form took another step forward when third-placed Velociraptor scored at Chester last weekend.

Godolphin’s Al Hudaiba stands out as the main threat following a gutsy win in the Superlative Stakes at HQ.

That said, he had a gruelling battle that afternoon and looked like he needed every single yard of the seven furlongs.

I’m just not convinced this sharper Goodwood track plays to his strengths. Expect Ryan Moore to dictate things from the front on Haffner and leave the Godolphin runner with too much ground to make up.

A quick nod to Dr Rascal as well-Oliver Cole has a fair chance of adding to his father Paul’s brilliant record in this contest.

The juvenile colt has looked classy in winning both his starts to date and looks well capable of making the step up in class.

3:00: HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2) (7f) – ITV

QIRAT loves it here at Goodwood and offers far better value than the clear top-rated Lake Forest.

He pulled off a stunning 150/1 shock in the Sussex Stakes last season-and could end up in that race again on Wednesday, as both he and Lake Forest hold entries.

He arrives on the back of a victory at York, where he wore a first-time tongue-tie that remains fitted today.

Lake Forest finished runner-up to Witness Stand in this race last year after being given far too much to do from the rear.

Expect him to be ridden much closer to the pace this time, but at even-money for a horse with just one win from his last nine starts, he’s simply too short to back.

I’d much rather take a shot on Qirat continuing his love affair with Goodwood and handing Colin Keane his first win aboard this Juddmonte runner.

3:35: Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) (2m) – ITV

SCANDINAVIA burst onto the staying scene last year, and as a four-year-old, he looks set to dominate this division for a long time to come.

He landed this exact prize 12 months ago as a three-year-old and has since pushed his career earnings past £1.2m with four more victories-including a brilliant double in the St Leger and last month’s Ascot Gold Cup.

That Ascot performance came in a relentless battle with Trawlerman, who reopposes today.

Trawlerman will undoubtedly be sharper now after that seasonal reappearance, but he’s eight years old now.

Since 1962, only three horses aged eight or older have won this race. That said, the last one to manage it was another Godolphin runner, Cavalryman back in 2014.

He’s also 1-for-1 at Goodwood, having won a class-rated handicap here in 2022, though this is his first stab at the race itself.

2025 St Leger runner-up Rahiebb, alongside Amiloc and Lazy Griff, look the most likely contenders to fight it out for the placings.

4:10: Coral Rewards Shaker Handicap (5f) – ITV

The final televised event of the day is a minefield of a five-furlong handicap where you could make a solid case for half the field.

Richard Spencer saddles five runners: Twilight Calls, Run Boy Run, Rapper’s Delight, The Man, and Candy.

Of that group, RAPPER’S DELIGHT really jumps out under George Wood following some fine runner-up efforts-and he sits a pound better off compared to his second behind Nanna’s Sparkle last time out.

Given Wood has partnered Run Boy Run regularly this term, his decision to ride Rapper’s Delight is telling.

We also have 2024 winner TATTERSALL back for more, sitting just 2lbs higher than his winning mark, making him an easy shortlist pick.

Meanwhile, SEVEN QUESTIONS commands plenty of respect under Jamie Spencer.

He’s a proven course winner who ran creditably (11th) in the Stewards’ Cup off a mark of 100, and he looks dangerously well-handicapped off 88 today.
