What a month we have in store – the Derby, the Northumberland Plate and Royal Ascot stand before us with June busting out all over!
But before we dig into the riches of the Flat we’ve been reflecting on the extraordinary debt our sport owes to the inspirational saddle genius of Rachael Blackmore.
The Tipperary jockey has been a red-hot tip whenever and wherever she’s had the leg up. Backing Blackmore has become a routine in many a household and betting shop. The retiring star who refused to be pigeon-holed as a ‘woman jockey’, insisting she’s just a regular jock at work among equals, has done more for opening up the sport to the whole of the public than any other.
What a brilliant legacy – whatever comes next Rachael Blackmore has left her mark and hats off to her and people like Shark Hanlon and Henry de Bromhead who were shrewd enough to recognise sporting genius when they saw it.
Let’s hope racing as a whole will also make the most of such a rich contribution – across all codes, barriers and boundaries.
