Dawn Run wins Cheltenham Gold Cup under Jonjo O’Neill

Racing over jumps used to be almost exclusively the domain of geldings. The first mare to win a Champion Hurdle was African Sister in 1939 and we then had to wait until 1984 for the second mare in the shape of Dawn Run.
Flakey Dove made it three in 1994 and since then we have had a spate of successful mares with Annie Power in 2016, Epatante in 2020 and Honeysuckle in 2021 and 2022. In fact if it wasn’t for that God-awful Mares' Hurdle we may well have had quite a few...
