Trainer Clive Cox says Golden Horde will likely be given a shot at Newmarket's July Cup after his victory at Royal Ascot on Friday.
Golden Horde was sent off at 5/1 for the Commonwealth Cup on day four of the Berkshire meeting and although this was his first run of the season, he showed no signs of rustiness as he clinched victory by one-and-a-half lengths.
Under the guidance of Adam Kirby, the three-year-old had too much for his rivals after moving into the lead two furlongs out, finishing ahead of second-placed Kimari and 50/1 shot Ventura Rebel in third.
There is plenty of talk about where Golden Horde will be sent next and, when speaking after the race, Cox revealed the July Cup at Newmarket is the most likely option .Many will be watching the race via live stream in these times of crowd restrictions.
“I'm very proud of him. He's a lovely big, strong horse. He was a wonderful two-year-old, but with the size and scope he had we were always hopeful that when he strengthened into his frame he'd improve again,” he said.
“He's really grown into his frame now. Last year he was very good and he's improved again. Adam knows him well enough now, one quality he has is a great cruising speed.
“The July Cup looks to be the next obvious step if he comes out of this well.”
