Grassick hopeful of June restart

The IRTA's chief executive Michael Grassick is feeling optimistic that the horse season will resume from June 1.

Like most sports around the world, is currently until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic, and there is no confirmed date as to when things will get back to normal.

Several high-profile races have either fallen by the wayside this year or have been rescheduled for the back end of the campaign, leaving trainers, owners and jockeys to feel the financial strain.

Unfortunately, with no income forthcoming, the Irish racehorse trainers association (IRTA) has warned there could be an increase in the number of animals being euthanised because owners won't be able to afford to look after their entire stable.

There is huge pressure for horse racing to get up-and-running as quick as possible, and Grassick believes that a season resumption at the start of June looks feasible, but probably not before then.

He was quoted as saying by The Irish Times: “Personally I feel we have a chance from June 1st. To be racing before June 1st is optimistic, I think.”
