O’Meara leads tributes to ‘legend’ Suedois

Trainer David O'Meara has described Suedois as a “legend of a horse” after the winner was retired at the age of nine.

O'Meara brought Suedois to his Yorkshire yard at the end of his four-year-old season and the pair enjoyed plenty of success together from that point on, claiming four victories from 32 outings.

While not the best strike rate, the majority of Suedois' successes were lucrative ones, earning over £1.5million in prize money over the course of his career.

His most memorable triumph came in the 2017 edition of the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland, while he also came out on top at and .

Suedois signed off from his globe-trotting career with victory in in January and O'Meara admits even he was surprised by just how successful his charge was.

For a horse like him to have amassed the prize-money he has is quite phenomenal really,” O'Meara told Post. “There are plenty of top-class Group 1 that don't accumulate what he has in his career in terms of prize-money and he'll definitely be missed around the yard.”

“He wouldn't have had the best of joints and we just felt that it possibly could be catching up with him so we felt it was best to call it a day with him.”

“He was a legend of a horse,” added O'Meara. “Anything from six furlongs to a mile suited him fine, all ground came alike to him.

“Steve [Parkin] sponsors the Clipper Logistics Boomerang Stakes so the day he won that Group 2 at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend in 2017 was obviously special for him.”
