Jockey Davy Condon has been forced to retire because of the risk of causing further damage to his spinal injury.
Condon fell from Portrait King with three fences to go in this month’s Grand National at Aintree and was left with spinal concussion for the second time this year.
It was first thought that the Irish jockey had avoided any serious injury, but after being referred to a neurosurgeon for an ongoing problem in his neck, the new spinal injury was uncovered.
Dr Adrian McGoldrick, senior Turf Club medical officer, confirmed that Condon had been urged to call time on his racing career or face the risk of serious repercussions in the future.
