Aintree run for New One

Twiston-Davies keen to put Champion Hurdle frustration behind him at Aintree

Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies has confirmed that The New One will try to defend his Aintree Hurdle title on April 9.

The seven-year-old won the Grade 1 race last year after defeating second-placed Rock On Ruby and the victory started off a successful run for the bay gelding.

The New One recorded wins at Kempton, Cheltenham and two at Haydock Park in what was a very successful time on the course but the recent outing was disappointing to say the least.

The bay gelding was fancied to challenge for the Champion Hurdle at Prestbury Park on Tuesday but never really got into the race, finishing a poor fifth behind winner Faugheen.

Twiston-Davies admitted the display was frustrating but the trainer insists the team are not too down, confirming The New One’s entry for the Aintree Hurdle.

“We were just a little bit disappointed on the day, but he’s fine,” he said. “He’ll go to Aintree for the two and a half miler again.”
