Ombudsman ruled out of Breeders’ Cup; Japan Cup tentative target

Ombudsman Ascot

Champion Stakes hero Ombudsman will not travel to Keeneland for the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Following his decisive three-and-three-quarter length victory over Calandagan at Ascot, joint-trainer John Gosden has performed a U-turn regarding initial plans to head to America.

Gosden revealed that upon reflection, the quick turnaround and grueling transatlantic journey would come too soon for the superstar five-year-old.

Instead, the Clarehaven team has raised the tentative possibility of taking on Tokyo’s prestigious Japan Cup in late November before the horse is likely retired to stud.

Gosden: “The Horse Has to Come First”

Explaining the change of heart, John Gosden emphasized that asking Ombudsman to undergo transatlantic travel and quarantine so soon after his hard-fought Group 1 victory at Ascot would not be in his best interest:

“It’s very simple, the horse ran four days ago at Ascot and he would have to work tomorrow, get on a plane for a cross-Atlantic flight, quarantine and it’s not fair to ask him to do that then ask him to run back within 14 days with a long journey in the middle.”

“In fairness, we felt having discussed it with everyone, we shouldn’t be trying to do that with him after he ran such a brilliant race in the Champion Stakes and we could consider the Japan Cup now. There’s plenty of time to that now in November, but to rush him over to America and put him through that we didn’t think was in the best interests of the horse.”

Addressing the potential trip to Asia, Gosden added:

“Japan would be a tentative plan and no more than that. It’s the only other race this year he could really run in and an important international race, so to that extent it’s a tentative plan. After that we’re probably talking retirement and it would have been nice to go to America, we wanted to go and do it because we like the Breeders’ Cup a lot, but the horse has to come first.”

Has John Gosden Ever Won The Japan Cup?

John Gosden has never won the Japan Cup in his illustrious career, making a potential tilt with Ombudsman an opportunity to fill a rare blank on his extraordinary CV.

If Ombudsman were to go to Tokyo and prevail, he would follow in the footsteps of the French-trained Calandagan, who became the last European-trained winner of the race after capturing the prize in November 2025.

Prior to Calandagan’s historic triumph, no European raider had won the Japan Cup since Luca Cumani’s Alkaased in 2005.

Ombudsman beat Calandagan in the Champion Stakes at Ascot in October.
