Ombudsman further cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s top flat performers with an authoritative victory in the QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot on Saturday, 17th October.

Showing his signature turn of foot and incredible tenacity under pressure, the stellar colt put a world-class field to bed with ease.

The win capped a fantastic domestic season and provided connections with total confidence to take aim at a global prize across the Atlantic.

And also help give Godolphin yet another leading owners title for the 2026 season.

John Gosden told the Racing Post.

“Ombudsman is fine this morning and the plan is to take him to the Breeders’ Cup Turf. He had a lead out yesterday and is trotting this morning.”

Adding – “We’ve deliberately planned his year, which started in January when getting ready for Meydan, where he won the Dubai Turf.

“After that we let him down and brought him back for a prep before he won the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Which is ‘a win and you’re in’ for the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

“We then let him down again before York after which he had a two-month gap until British Champions Day, so he went into Saturday a fresh horse.”

Yes!

Master trainer John Gosden achieved a famous success in the race back in 2018 with the legendary mare Enable.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori at Churchill Downs, Enable made history by becoming the first horse ever to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders’ Cup Turf in the same calendar year.

Training alongside his son Thady, John Gosden will now look to replicate that famous Breeders’ Cup Turf victory with Ombudsman at Keeneland in 2026.

The Breeders’ Cup Turf Has Been a Good Race for the Europeans – Winning 10 of the Last 11 (Willie Mullins Won in 2025 with Ethical Diamond)

European runners have dominated the Breeders’ Cup Turf in recent history. Taking home the trophy in 10 of the last 11 renewals.

European trainers consistently target this race as the firm, fast American turf combined with a galloping mile-and-a-half trip suits top-tier European middle-distance horses.

Adding to that unbelievable record, jump-racing maestro Willie Mullins stunned the flat racing world in 2025. When Ethical Diamond stormed home at Del Mar.

Ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, Ethical Diamond broke the course record to cause a massive 20/1 upset.

Handing Closutton a historic Breeders’ Cup success.
