Aidan O’Brien at Royal Ascot
Few trainers have left a mark on Royal Ascot quite like Aidan O’Brien.
As the most successful trainer in the history of the meeting, the Ballydoyle supremo has racked up 96 winners-a record that continues to grow season after season.
It all started back in 1997 when Harbour Master gave him his very first taste of success at the royal meeting, which is broadcast on ITV Racing each year.
Since then, O’Brien has practically set up camp in the winner’s enclosure, collecting multiple leading trainer titles and rewriting the history books along the way.
Over the years, the very best horses to come out of Ballydoyle have produced some of their most memorable performances on this track.
The Hall of Fame: Big-Name Winners at the Royal Meeting
Legends like Giant’s Causeway, Rock Of Gibraltar, Yeats, So You Think, Minding, Highland Reel, Love, and Auguste Rodin have all struck gold here.
More recently, stars like Paddington and Kyprios have added their names to the honours board.
Paddington’s brilliant victory in the 2023 St James’s Palace Stakes was a massive milestone.
As it was O’Brien’s 83rd Royal Ascot winner, officially making him the most successful trainer the meeting has ever seen.
What makes O’Brien’s record so incredible is his versatility.
He wins across every single division, from sharp two-year-olds in the Coventry Stakes to elite middle-distance champions and legendary stayers in the Gold Cup.
His CV includes multiple victories in the week’s absolute showpieces. Including the St James’s Palace Stakes, the Gold Cup, and the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
With the Ballydoyle conveyor belt showing no signs of slowing down.
He arrives every June with a team fully capable of adding yet another chapter to one of the greatest training careers the sport has ever witnessed.
What Is Aidan O’Brien’s Ultimate Royal Ascot Race?
If you had to pick one race that has defined Aidan O’Brien’s Royal Ascot dominance, it’s the Coventry Stakes.
This six-furlong Group 2 for two-year-olds is the ultimate launching pad for future stars. With the Ballydoyle trainer making this race his personal playground.
O’Brien has won it a record 11 times.
No other trainer comes close, which tells you everything you need to know about his ability to get top-class juveniles peaking for the biggest stage.
His love affair with the Coventry began in 1997 with Harbour Master. Who was a horse that didn’t just give him his first Coventry win, but his first-ever Royal Ascot winner full stop.
Aidan O’Brien’s Coventry Stakes Roll of Honour:
Since that breakthrough, a long list of exceptional youngsters have followed suit:
- Fasliyev (1999)
- Landseer (2001)
- Statue Of Liberty (2002)
- Henrythenavigator (2007)
- Power (2011)
- War Command (2013)
- Caravaggio (2016)
- Arizona (2019)
- River Tiber (2023)
- Camille Pissarro (2024)
- Gstaad (2025)
Many of these went on to become multiple Group 1 winners and Classic heroes, with Henrythenavigator, Power, and Caravaggio standing out as true greats of the turf.
Of them all, Caravaggio’s performance in 2016 is still remembered as one of the most explosive; the unbeaten colt absolutely dazzled the Ascot crowd before returning later to land the Commonwealth Cup.
Henrythenavigator went on to establish himself as one of Europe’s elite milers. Completing the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas double, while recent victories from River Tiber and Gstaad prove that Ballydoyle’s grip on this race is as strong as ever.
Given that incredible production line of early talent, it’s no surprise the Coventry remains the race most closely linked to Ascot’s most successful trainer.
This year, O’Brien’s main hopes look to lie with Confucius, a recent winner at Naas. Plus Great Barrier Reef, who comes into the race fresh from a brilliant win in the Group Three Kilkea Castle Marble Hill Stakes at the Curragh.
