Ben Morgan’s Saturday tips – Carlisle & Chester – George Boughey hoping to be crowned Champonie at Chester

Racing Ahead’s resident tipster Ben Morgan selects his best bets for Saturday’s action at Carlisle & Chester.

Carlisle 2.33 – Celandine looks value in open Achilles Stakes

Ed Walker’s CELANDINE looks like a potential improver this year after enjoying a decent three year old campaign.

She looked tapped for toe in a very fast Nunthorpe last year but this stiff 5f at Carlisle could bring out the best in her.

Her reappearance at Newmarket was satisfactory enough and if latching onto the leaders at the furlong pole, I don’t think many will finish faster than her.

Carlisle 3.45 – Channon to continue on Crest of a wave

Jack Channon has made a bright start to his solo training career, showing his ability to land big pots time and time again.

He could be on for another windfall here with CREST OF FIRE looking to hold a strong chance in the re-arranged Silver Bowl handicap.

Some top level form as a two year old, he threatens to improve further as a three year old and with positive reports on his homework, I would have every reason to believe he is better than a mark of 86.

At a bigger price in the same race I think SPECIAL DIVIDEND is worth a mention.

Jamie Insole and Dr Newland are building a strong team on the flat and this fellow would be one of their better horses.

If you ignore his run at Listed level last season then you could argue he should be a lot shorter here as he hadn’t done much wrong prior to that.

Not all went his way during his foray into Listed company but the fact connections thought he justified a go at that level suggests he could be well handicapped here too.

Chester 4.05 – Aptly named Boughey filly set for take off at Chester

It will be hard for CHAMPONIE to concede weight to a field of young, improving fillies but her run last time off the same mark would suggest she is more than capable of defying the burden.

George Boughey dropped her back down to 5f last time at Chester and although a slightly tardy start cost her her chance of victory, she did stay on powerfully in the final furlong to grab 6th.

She was the only runner to make any meaningful gains in that race which I saw as a big positive and the step back up to 6f on Saturday will only aid her chances as connections will hope this proves a stepping stone into pattern races.
