Richard Eagle: Hardy folk at work in Dorset

Richard Eagle visits county yards and introduces filly Olivia Jane

Until being told by Martin Clunes I hadn’t realised that the famous Dorset author Thomas Hardy had incorporated horses significantly in his writings.
He used them as both literal characters and as powerful symbols. Horses appear in his poems, novels and short stories, reflecting the rural setting of the county.
Hardy’s respect for everything equine is shown in his HORSES ABROAD piece where he refers to those horses that “went to war” but became “war waste”. A painful reflection on those lost supporting our troops overseas.
