At such a nervous and dangerous time around the world it seems a little glib to talk of racing’s ups and downs.
On the plus side, track attendances seem to be on the up, the racing has been magnificent, and there are a range of huge success stories.
But there are depressing major downsides, of course.
Many in the sport are feeling the financial pressures, some have gone under – and Rolf Johnson in this issue highlights the wider worry of the knock-on effect of new taxes on bookies.
Kempton had a magnificent Christmas Festival, crowned by a brilliant King George. Yet the famous course is seemingly doomed and that great Boxing Day highlight might be the last held there.
On the bright side, we have a glowing success story from the Knavesmire in an issue packed with information about the healthy day-to-day thrills and spills of our great sport – from all quarters of the UK and Ireland – with expert tips, reports and talk, brilliant interviews, facts and stats from Andy Newton, time figures from John Anthony.
We live in interesting times. Always ups and downs over the jumps – just try to keep winning!
