Unity against tax rises on betting is all very well. But the fallen heroes of the Crimea were, like racing, ‘solid’ – and look where that got them.

The world teeters on the edge of war while racing shoots itself in the foot. The latest stunt, wiping out racing on September 10 reminded me of Lord Tennyson’s Charge of the Light Brigade
