Andy Newton’s ITV Racing horse racing tips on Saturday 15th Aug – Back Newbury NAP

See Andy Newton’s ITV Horse Racing tips this Saturday (15th August) as the ‘free-to-air’ channel takes in seven races live from three tracks. 

At Newbury we’ve four ITV races that include the G2 Hungerford Stakes (3:10), where William Haggas eyes a fourth win since 2021.

Then at Newmarket we’ve the spectacle that is the Grey Horse Handicap (2:10). Top tip – I bet a grey horse wins this one folks!

While at Ripon we see there biggest meeting of the season for Great St Wilfrid Handicap (3:35pm) day – with two of the last four winners coming from stall 6, could this be an angle in?

Anyway, plenty to get stuck into before the big four-day York Ebor Festival Meeting next week.

So, let’s get cracking.

Andy Newton’s ITV Racing Tips from Newbury: Back Haggis Newbury NAP 

1:25 – NEWBURY Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m5½f ITV

DUBAI HONOUR is the tentative vote here and a race with several chances.

This William Haggas globetrotter will be having his 38th career run. Having won eight of those and winning over £5.4m in prize money.

He was last seen Down Under running in G1 races so being the top-rated (118) this ease in grade will be a big help.

This will also be the first time here at Newbury and the furthest he’s gone (1m5f). But at his age this is probably what he needs now.

Regular ride Tom Marquand rides.

Of the others, Mount Atlas and Tabletalk are closely-matched after a head separated them last time.

But the last-named is hard to win with and loves a silver and would probably come second in a one-horse race.

While the unexposed REBEL ROCKER, who was 6th in the Epsom Derby might have more to offer over this trip.

1:55 – NEWBURY D&H, Excellence In Nutrition Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-90) 5f ITV

RHYTHM N HOOVES landed this prize for the Robert Cowell yard last year and is back rated 9lbs lower so has to be respected.

Yes, he’s not won since (15 races), but has slipped down the handicap as a result.

Has had the same prep as last year too – running in the same Ascot race last time (8th), and was only 3 lengths back that day at the line.

Marco Ghiani rides.

In an open race Glamorous Breeze is noted too, having been 9th in this 12 months ago – but is 3lbs higher this time.

While Seven Questions could go well at a price and also runs for the Robert Cowell yard, who look after Rhythm N Hooves.

He’s a bit on an in-and-out character but won at Goodwood in May off 87 and is a pound lower here.

2:35 – NEWBURY TPT Fire Handicap Cl2 (3yo+ 0-105) 7f ITV

SCOVILLE gets the nod here having run well at Ascot and Goodwood recently over 1m.

But I think the key to him here is the drop back to 7f, as despite being a past winner over a mile, he’s been running out of gas in the final stages recently.

He was pretty much leading at the seven pole in both his recent runs, and so the reduced trip here and being dropped 2lbs looks ideal.

This is also a race the Haggas team like to target – winning 3 of the last 9. Tom Marquand gets the leg-up.

Of the others, course winner Great Acclaim is respected.

As is Havana Pusey, who is down in grade and was 3rd in this in 2025 off a 2lb higher mark.

While last year’s Grey Horse Handicap winner Addison Grey is another to note.

He’s rated too high (93) to run in that Newmarket contest, and the Cox team also have a good record in this race (2/6).

3:10 – NEWBURY Visit Malta Hungerford Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (3yo+) 7f ITV

EXTREMELY ZAIN can bounce back here after a slightly disappointing beaten favourite at Ascot last time.

This William Haggas runner was backed into 3/1 that day but was only 4th (of 16) to Amazing Journey and is stepping up in grade to a Group 2 here.

But he’s still unexposed with just four career runs (3 wins) and I think the return to Newbury will be a plus.

He won here back in May over this 7f trip and being a 3yold gets 6lbs from the older horses.

Haggas, who has won this race 4 times in the last 11 years, also landed this prize with a 3yold in 2021 (Sacred).

Never So Brave and Coppull are the top-rated (114) and command respect on their best form.

But last season’s G1 City Of York Stakes winner Never So Brave has been a tad disappointing since.

He represents last year’s winning owners though (Saeed Suhail), who took this with More Thunder.

Witness Stand ran well (3rd) in the Lennox Stakes and is noted too.

While the trip for me is the query for Symbol Of Honour being 0-3 over 7f, but to counteract that is 2-2 here at Newbury.

Andy Newton’s ITV Racing Tips from Newmarket: Folio To Make It A ‘Grey’ Day at HQ

2:10 – NEWMARKET (JULY) Betway Grey Horse Handicap Cl4 (3yo+ 0-85) 6f ITV

FIRST FOLIO can lead home the greys here in what is always a spectacle of a race on the July Course.

This Julie Camacho runner had a few entries this weekend and was also a fine 3rd in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon 12 months ago.

But connections are opting for this race and it’s easy to see why.

He’s rated a massive 15lbs lower than that GSW run at Ripon last season.

The 8yold also has some history in this race. Having run 4th in 2024 to Archduke Ferdinand, but is also back rated 13lbs lower.

He also ran 4th to that same horse at Redcar last time out, but is 7lbs better off this time around.

Clifford Lee riding is the icing on the cake.

Past winners of the race Strike (won in 2022) and has run in this four times. He gets Billy Loughnane.

Plus the already mentioned Archduke Ferdinand.

Andy Newton’s ITV Racing Tips from Ripon: Kats Bob To Purr Home For Carr Camp

2:55 – RIPON William Hill Supporting Mnd Silver Cup Handicap Cl4 (3yo+ 0-80) 6f ITV

KATS BOB and the 2024 winner GRANT WOOD stand out here in a very open affair.

The former was 3rd in 2025 off 81 and is back rated 4lbs lower (77).

He comes here in fine fettle too after two silvers at York and Redcar.

The horse likes Ripon too despite never winning here and regular rider William Pyle continues in the saddle.

Grant Wood took this in 2024 and hasn’t won on the turf since. But this means he’s back rated 3lbs lower (77) and comes here off a slightly better run (4th) here at Ripon.

Of the others, this race has only been run three times, but all three winners came from gates 10 to 12, so maybe there is something here.

Woodstock, Anaisa and Tolsty try to keep this run going.

3:25 – RIPON William Hill/MND Association Great St Wilfrid Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV

KHAFIZ is chanced in a typically open renewal of the Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon.

This Roger Fell runner is running over 6f for the first time since his debut at Newbury, but his often prominent run style suggests it’s worth a crack.

He heads here having been 4th the last twice at York and Chester (didn’t get the best of runs) and is also down another pound here.

This takes him to a mark of 91 and with the 109-rated Aramram in the race this means  Khafiz gets in here with only 8st 8lbs.

A plus as 10 of the last 11 winners carried 9-1 or less.

Kodiac Thriller is respected too as he liked it here – with form at Ripon reading 3-2-1-4. He was 2nd in 2025 too off 82 and is now off 84.

The niggle is that he’s yet to win off this high a rating, but the Mark Walford team boast a decent 20% SR with their 4+yolds here.

Fast Track Harry is also noted after a good second to Amazing Journey at Ascot last time. And that horse has since franked the form to go in again.
