Owners could be barred from attending race meetings

The British Authority say they are seeking confirmation on whether owners can attend behind-closed-doors meetings.

A new lockdown, which will be imposed from up until December 2 at the earliest, was announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday night.

Elite sports events are allowed to continue behind-closed-doors, meaning all scheduled meetings can take place.

However, the BHA say they are unsure if owners will be able to attend in line with restrictions on “non-essential travel”.

Following the first lockdown, owners were barred from racecourses until July 4, despite restarting on June 1.

BHA chief executive Nick Rust says he is grateful the will be able to continue amid the COVID-19 pandemic but says he will be seeking further answers from the government.

He said: “It's a relief [racing is on] and it's testament to the team effort in the sport for following some tough protocols and managing a lot of change to help ensure we've run 500 events behind closed doors successfully without any evidence of transmission of the virus.

“Fundamentally on first assessment last night our only query outstanding was around the participation of owners. Obviously, we'd love them to keep coming but there have been some tough restrictions reimposed on hospitality so there are no guarantees on that.”
