Field Of Gold set to make seasonal return at Sandown, says Barry Mahon

Royal Ascot winner Field Of Gold could make his seasonal bout at Sandown,  later this month, in the Bet365 Mile according to Juddmonte racing manager Barry Mahon.

Royal Ascot winner Field Of Gold could make his seasonal bout at Sandown, later this month, in the Bet365 Mile according to Juddmonte racing manager Barry Mahon.

Renowned owners Juddmonte decided to keep him in training and he could make his return in the Surrey event, in a race that saw trainers John and Thady Gosden last claim victory with Palace Pier in 2021.

Juddmonte European racing manager Mahon said on At The Races: “It’s very possible he goes to Sandown and he’s training towards there.”

Last time out

Field Of Gold has been off the track since the end of last season, where he was a well-held fifth in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, at Ascot, on Champions Day.

It came as the second of two races at the end of last season, where he finished as the beaten favourite – first when fourth behind his (150/1 shot) ownermate Qirat in the Sussex Stakes, then behind 100/1 chance Cicero’s Gift, on Champions Day.

However, had previously been unlucky to lose the 2000 Guineas on his second run of the season and he went to avenge that defeat with his win in the Irish equivalent and in the St James’ Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot

Exciting year ahead

Mahon added: “We’re going to have a discussion, myself, John and Thady and owners later this week just to confirm that, but if John and Thady are happy with his fitness levels, then that is where he will start [Sandown].”

Field Of Gold currently holds an entry into next month’s Lockinge Stakes, for which he trades as the (9/4) favourite.

He will look to make it three consecutive wins for the Gosdens and back-to-back wins for Juddmonte, following Audience’s 2024 win and Lead Artist’s triumph last season.

Mahon said: “Hopefully it will be another exciting year for him, he showed us last year he is top class.

“By all accounts, he has strengthened from three to four and Colin Keane was very happy when he sat on him recently.

“It would be great if he can continue to progress and we can get a clean run with him.”
