Our resident tipster Ben Morgan gives his best bets for days four and five at Glorious Goodwood
Goodwood 2.30 – Rhos to revel in the rain
Connections of RHOSCOLYN would have been overjoyed to see the downpour on Thursday as it will almost certainly enhance his chance in the Golden Mile today.
As big as 40/1 prior to the rain, he is now best price 12/1 despite only running two days ago.
He didn’t enjoy the rub of the green on Wednesday but it looks like his luck could be due to change now the ground has softened up and a plum draw down low is also very useful.
He is a course specialist who is lurking around a mark that he is more than capable of winning off and he has shown enough this season to suggest he remains in good heart.
Stablemate THEORYOFEVERYTHING is another who should appreciate the softer conditions and put a below par run last time out behind him.
His best runs for David O’Meara have come on ground with some juice in and there is no doubting he has the ability to go close in a race of this nature.
Like Rhoscolyn he has shown enough this season to suggest he is in fine fettle and I hope backing him each way will at least return some place money.
Goodwood 4.55 – Drop back in trip could work the oracle for Owen’s 3 year old
I was surprised that AMMES did not stay the 1m 6f trip last time after shaping like a guaranteed stayer at Ascot the time before. He saw plenty of daylight at Haydock which probably didn’t help but a positive ride here could be just what the Doctor ordered.
The ground is a slight unknown but he is a big, brute of a horse who shouldn’t mind getting his toe in but until they do it is difficult to be sure. Fingers crossed for a step back in the right direction.
Day Five
Goodwood 3.05 – Depending on how much the ground dries out between Friday and Saturday we still might need horses who like some juice in the ground. It is hard to predict from this stage however and thankfully my selection shouldn’t mind too much what it does, although he will be suited to softer conditions.
STRIKE RED is arguably in the form of his life despite not getting his head in front this season but it certainly isn’t through the want of trying. He fared best of those on the stand side last week at York in a competitive handicap and with a kinder draw here he should be back in the mix again.
He seems to be one of those horses at present who always give you a run for your money so let’s hope he gets the breaks and lands a deserved victory.
