The Northumberland Plate is normally run at the end of June, but this year it falls into July and will be run on Saturday 1st.
With the Epsom Derby and Royal Ascot Meetings a distant memory by the time this race comes about – Newcastle racecourse gets the chance to grab some of the headlines.
The race is run over two miles, with the Northumberland Plate being one of the richest staying handicap contests around and to the older readers may still be referred to as the ‘Pitmen’s Derby’.
