What Is The Kentucky Derby?

One of the most famous races in the world is the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the Triple Crown series for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds. Held each year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on the first Saturday in May, since 1875, the Derby is run over 1 1/4 miles and is set to be one of the finest racing spectacles of 2022.

qualify to compete in the Kentucky Derby  through a series of races known as the Road to the Kentucky Derby. These stakes races are held at racetracks across the country and horses get qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby if they finish in the top four. The Derby starters are comprised of the horses with the most qualifying points, with two of the 20 spots reserved for the top qualifiers from the European and Japanese Road to the Derby qualifying events, if they want to take up these places.

The horse who wins the Kentucky Derby receives a blanket of red roses, the official flower of the Kentucky Derby. The race is commonly referred to as the “Run for the Roses.”

The winning horse becomes the only horse eligible to complete that year's Triple Crown, by running in and winning the two other legs of the series. The middle “jewel” is the Preakness Stakes two weeks later at Pimilco Race Course in Baltimore, and the final leg is the Belmont Stakes three weeks after the Preakness at Belmont Park, New State. Only 13 horses throughout history have won the Triple Crown. In recent years only American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018. They were the first since 1978.

The most famous horse in Triple Crown history is probably Secretariat, who back in 1973 won all three races but set fastest times for each which still stand! In 2010 he became the subject of an eponymous Hollywood movie about his feats.

Derby 2022 Preview

This year's Kentucky Derby comes off the back of a difficult 2021 for race organisers. The horse that finished first-past-the-post in 2021, Medina Spirit, was subsequently disqualified for doping offences. Even more tragically, the horse died later in the season from a cardiac arrest. Medina Spirit's trainer Bob Baffaert, has been banned from entering horses for 2022.

Despite this annus horribilis, the Kentucky Derby 2022 is a hugely anticipated event. Out if front in the qualifying points by a distance is Epicentre. Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, this looks set to be the horse to beat. Coming up on the rails as the major challengers are Chad Brown's Zandon, and recent Florida Derby conqueror White Abarrio.
