Former Ascot Winner Fennell Bay Tipped At Musselburgh

MUSSELBURGH have probably the best ground in Britain and Ireland at present and they stage the feature card on Wednesday on ground described, almost amazingly, as good ahead of the meeting.

Fennell Bay (2.10) was a winner for Mark Johnston on the level back in 2012 and made a smooth transition to hurdles when scoring at Fakenham over the minimum trip at New Year. I am slightly surprised to see him step up in trip for his second start but he can defy a penalty at the expense of the Donald McCain runner Plan Again, winner of both starts under rules, and another stepping up in distance having made a winning debut at back in October.

There is a terrific handicap chase over 2m 4f and plenty of potential front-runners in a race which might suit the hold-up and Alpha One (2.40) fits the bill with Denis O'Regan reunited. The selection has won over 2m 6f, has run well over C&D but wouldn't want the ground any worse than good to soft. McCain's Radio Nowhere ran a cracker on his chase debut from a 4lb lower mark but is one of many who may wish to lead and he is overlooked for that reason.

The juvenile Forced Family Fun must go close in the valuable 2m handicap hurdle having scored at last time but I prefer the chances of Figaro and Roman Flight (3.50) with preference for the latter. Kieron Edgar didn't cover himself in glory on his birthday last Friday when carrying my cash on Baltimore Rock (15/8 into 8/11) at but he takes off a valuable 7lbs on the selection and can reward each way support in a competitive heat.

Golan Way (4.25) is a fascinating contender in the Hunters' Chase returning from a 400 day lay-off and he is at his best going right-handed. He has joined the yard of Tim Vaughan since his last run and if back to anywhere near his best would be too good for today's opposition.

There is an excellent card at featuring the belated reappearance of Aupcharlie (4.00) who can upset the likely favourite Turban who put up a fine round of jumping to score in a valuable handicap chase over the minimum trip last month. The selection won first time out last season when trained by but he has joined Henry De Bromhead this season whose yard are just beginning to hit top gear.

Turban has never won beyond the minimum trip but gets this intermediate 2m 4f but he has never been the most consistent and has to give 3lbs to the selection.

At Kempton Bretherton (6.45) carries plenty of weight but is well drawn and suggested he was well ahead of the handicapper when scoring at earlier in the month in his first time blinkers. He had attracted plenty of market support on previous occasions which suggests his homework was better than what he had shown on the track and he can follow up with his apprentice taking off a valuable 3lbs.
