I can’t help it, I love this time of year. It’s getting cooler, and wetter, and darker… and I’m excited for everything! 

We’ve got Irish Champions Weekend, the St Leger at Doncaster, Arc weekend, British Champions Day, the Breeders’ Cup…

And, of course, the opening jumps meetings from Chepstow, Cheltenham, Ascot, Punchestown, Leopardstown and on.

So, so good.

My excitement will have diminished by year end, no doubt, as the nights draw right in to the shortest day; but in the intervening four months we have some of the greatest racing in the calendar (and the promise of more to come in that otherwise difficult spell from January to March).

However, punting in the autumn brings its challenges: that cooler, wetter weather favours a different cohort of horses to the hot, dry summer…
