The sprint division takes centre stage at Newmarket’s July Course on Saturday for what promises to be a blockbuster renewal of the Group One July Cup.
So, horse racing fans, get your popcorn ready.
This year’s field brings together a mouth-watering clash of generations, with four Royal Ascot winners locking horns alongside one of Japan’s leading sprinters.
Leading the charge is the outstanding Venetian Sun, who confirmed herself as one of the stars of the sprinting division with a brilliant victory at the Royal Meeting.
She is joined by fellow Royal Ascot Group One winners Mission Central and Almeraq, who are both looking to strengthen their claims at the top of the six-furlong ranks.
While Wokingham Stakes hero Double Rush steps into Group One company hoping to prove he’s the next big name in sprinting.
Adding even more international intrigue is Japanese ace Satono Reve, making this a truly world-class contest.
It’s a race not to be missed this Saturday at Newmarket.

July Cup 2026 Key Runners: Blockbuster Renewal Headed by Four Royal Ascot Winners
Venetian Sun
Karl Burke’s star filly arrives at Newmarket at the peak of her powers.
Last time out she captured the Group One Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, producing a hugely determined display under Clifford Lee to deny Spicy Marg by a head.
Before that, she had run away with the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock on easier ground. While her Ascot success confirmed she is every bit as effective on a faster surface.
Having dropped back to sprinting after failing to stay the mile in the 1,000 Guineas earlier this spring, she has developed into the standard-bearer for the three-year-old sprint division.
She is a perfect five from five over six furlongs and also receives the valuable 9lb fillies’ allowance from the colts.
Karl Burke is bidding for a first July Cup victory.
Venetian Sun will also be attempting to become the first three-year-old filly to win the race since Habibti in 1983, and is expected to start favourite.
Almeraq
Representing the powerful Shadwell operation and trainer William Haggas, the progressive four-year-old produced a career-best performance when landing the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Travelling strongly just behind a furious early pace, Tom Marquand delivered him with perfect timing to snatch victory right on the line in a dramatic four-way photo finish.
Still lightly raced, Almeraq looks to be improving with every outing and his trainer believes there is even more to come physically.
He is another proven six-furlong specialist, having already won four times over the trip.
William Haggas is searching for his first July Cup success.
Mission Central
Aidan O’Brien’s exciting three-year-old speedster also starred at Royal Ascot, charging home late under Ryan Moore to win the Group One King Charles III Stakes over five furlongs.
Although that victory came over the minimum trip, his dominant juvenile performances at the Curragh.
Including an eight-length maiden success and victory in the Group Three Round Tower Stakes—both came over six furlongs.
He is an exceptionally versatile colt with plenty of pace and should be well suited by a strongly-run race.
O’Brien is the joint-most successful trainer in July Cup history with five victories, stretching from Stravinsky in 1999 to Ten Sovereigns in 2019.
Ryan Moore has also enjoyed success in the race, winning twice aboard U S Navy Flag and Ten Sovereigns.
Satono Reve
The fascinating international challenger is a two-time winner of Japan’s prestigious Takamatsunomiya Kinen.
Satono Reve heads to Newmarket after finishing an agonisingly close second behind Almeraq in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Ridden by Ryan Moore that day, he travelled strongly behind the pace before finishing just a whisker behind the winner.
Having performed with distinction in major international sprint races from Tokyo to Hong Kong, he brings top-class global form to the July Course.
The last Japanese-trained winner of the July Cup was Agnes World, trained by Hideyuki Mori, back in 2000.
Double Rush
Andrew Balding’s charge has been one of the handicap stories of the season and arrives at Newmarket chasing a remarkable four-timer.
His latest success came in the fiercely competitive Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot, where the progressive four-year-old son of Blue Point defied a big weight to score under Shane Foley.
Travelling smoothly through the race up the centre of the track, he showed plenty of determination to get home by a head.
Having already won twice over Newmarket’s six furlongs earlier this spring. He clearly relishes the course and now gets the chance to prove himself at the highest level in Group One company.
Andrew Balding knows exactly what it takes to win the July Cup, having struck with Alcohol Free in 2022.

Who Won the July Cup Last Year (2025)?

Run To Freedom finished third.
The victory made No Half Measures the highest-priced winner in the July Cup’s 149-year history. And also handed Richard Hughes his first Group One success as a trainer.
