Jockey Sam Twiston-Davies has told Sky Sports Racing that he “looks forward” to riding a 100/1 shot in April’s Grand National

Following his win on board Scott’s Legacy at Southwell, the 33-year-old spoke highly of Beauport, who finished 12th in the Grand National last year.

Twiston-Davies told Sky Sports Racing: “I always look forward to riding in the [Grand] National, you know Beauport is going to be towards a 100/1 shot, but he ran really well last year, to finish 12th.”

Beauport has raced three times since last season’s Grand National, finishing fourth of 10 – on his seasonal reappearance – in a Grade Three Handicap at Cheltenham

Very handy

That run preceded two runs back over hurdles, in which he was pulled up in the Long Walk at Ascot, before he finished fourth of five at Haydock – on his first start since undergoing wind surgery.

Twiston Davies – who will be in the saddle for his father Nigel and brother Willy – reflected on last year’s 12th-placed finish in this race, saying: “We rode him very handy, we were thinking they would go very quick and he ended up almost doing a bit much.”

The 10-year-old Gelding won the 2024 Midlands Grand National, which preceded a run of four races prior to his Grand National outing.

Those efforts saw him pulled up in the Scottish Grand National, prior to winning a Class Two Handicap Chase and placing within the top three twice, in Graded Hurdles races.

Optimistic on his chances

Beauport’s recent form isn’t compelling, though Twiston-Davies remains optimistic on his chances in Europe’s most valuable Handicap race.

He added: “We’ll do things differently this year and hopefully that will allow him to a top-10 finish.

“He’s a very likeable horse, he’s a good jumper, good stayer, and hopefully if we do things the right way, then that will see him run well.”
