Furthur won well at Newbury last time

Newbury 3.20 – Do yourself a Faivoir and back Skelton’s veteran each way

I’m not convinced this year’s edition of the William Hill Hurdle is a classic and the heavy ground is likely to make this a race only a few get into.

Due to these factors, I think a lot of these have question marks hanging over their head but for one horse who should appreciate the surface and has a solid record in these races.

FAIVOIR has been a star for the Skelton stable for a good few years now, and despite his advancing years, I think he still has something to offer in a race like this.

After a positive comeback in the Greatwood at Cheltenham, he has had a quiet couple of runs, but his mark has dropped as a result and Heidi Palin continues to take another 7lb off.

He would be well handicapped on his best form, but I don’t think he would have to be at his vintage best to play a part here.

Newbury 3.55 – Knight to relish heavy going on Newbury battlefield

KNIGHT OF ALLEN returns to the scene of his last success as he steps up to 3 miles for the first time.

Everything about the horse suggests he will relish the extra distance and the way he shaped at Cheltenham last time would also give backers plenty of encouragement.

When he won here, he did come with a late rattle, which again suggests the trip will bring about further improvement.

Currently on a mark of 127, he would need to win this, you think, in order to justify a bash at a Festival race, but if he puts in a repeat of any of his last two starts, I think he is in with a big chance.

Newbury 4.30 – Operation Trojan horse to succeed in Newbury finale

This Newbury bumper is usually a hot contest and I’m sure a lot of these horses will feature prominently in the big races over the next few years.

One horse who really impressed me last time out was TROJAN TALE for the Dan Horsford stable.

He hosed up in a Wincanton bumper, which looked a good race on paper, beating the right horses in the process.

The second and third were both likely types and had been supported, but this lad shot past them like they weren’t even there.

That suggested he was a top horse, which is why he merits his place in the line-up tomorrow.

Harry Cobden has been booked to do the steering, and with form on this surface already, he must have a good each way chance.
