Gallops back into the fray: Richard Eagle keeps eyes and ears pricked in the vales and over the downs

In the second half of the 19th century the small Hampshire settlement of Danebury, boasted racing yards and a racecourse that rivalled the best in Newmarket, both for numbers and sheer quality of horse.

Many Classic winners were trained near the pretty town of Stockbridge by the Day family and Tom Cannon.
