Back in the days when they were qualified to run in the race, three-year-olds won their fair share of renewals of the season’s premier staying event, The Gold Cup at Ascot. The very first Gold Cup, run in 1807, was won by the three-year-old Master Jackey and that age group won 20 times in all from that first win to Gainsborough’s final success for the Classic generation in 1918.
