Newmarket 1.45 – Woodhay to prove Wonderous

With the forecast quick ground set to favour front runners I think everything is pointing towards WOODHAY WONDER running a big race in the Heritage Handicap at 1.45.

Tom Ward’s flying filly loves it here at Newmarket and travelled supremely well on her return here at the Craven meeting.

The pace was hot that day, however, and she took a blow at just the wrong time so faded in the final 500 yards – but I saw enough there to suggest she is capable of winning off this current mark, especially back at her favourite course. 5/1 looks more than fair.

Newmarket 3.35 – Court to Rule in Buick’s favour

It would have been a hard decision for William Buick to choose between the two Appleby runners here but I do think he’s on the right one.

I’d rather be sat on one I know is going to come out of the dip and come home strong in a race like this and I imagine it’s the guarantee of stamina which swayed his decision.

The form in the book is there, though, as I think the Acomb was as good an Acomb as there has ever been and his return in the Jumeirah Guineas was nothing short of scintillating as he showed an electric turn of foot to beat a decent field.

A position in the midfield here would be ideal and given only 10 runners he should have little problem finding a way through I hope.

Despite being very sweet on Ruling Court, I’ve found myself having to have an each way punt on BENEVENTO at 100/1.

I’ve thought for a long time that there would be little pace in this race and a horse like him who likes to be up with it might just sneak a place as a result.

He went way too quick in the Craven but still finished a respectable fourth after running on after taking a blow.

An easy lead on quick ground, I think he might just get a few of these out of the saddle at the 2 pole.

Newmarket 3.35 – Ruling Court / Benevento

Sunday

I await Decs as this goes to press but I’m pretty sure HEY BOO is going to be my Guineas bet whatever lines up.

Jack Channon’s filly has come a long way in a short space of time having only made her debut in February.

After two wins at she made her turf debut in the Fred Darling where she stayed in nicely over 7f to be second.

The step up to a mile will certainly suit her on the back of that run but I’m not convinced that race will turn out to be genuine form.

The winner found a gear at the right time and stole four lengths out of most of the field so it impressed me that my selection stayed on to be clear second.

She is 66/1 here which I think is a huge price in a race which often throws up a surprise.
