Musselburgh stage the flat action this afternoon and it will be disappointing if Henrytheaeroplane (2.30) can't break his maiden at the second attempt having shaped with promise in a decent Haydock novice event won by a stablemate on debut earlier in the month. The runner up on the occasion was trained by Mark Johnston and the Middleham handler runs an inexpensive newcomer Bizzario this afternoon who, it ought to be noted, holds an entry in next year's Derby.
The obvious danger is Moonlightnavigator who cost £230,000 as a yearling and made his debut in a decent in a decent York maiden earlier in the month. Another son of Henrythenavigator who is entitled to come on for his initial outing and it won't be long before he sheds his maiden tag.
In the stayers' handicap Maoi Chinn Tire is looking for a fourth win from his last five starts but is still well treated on his best form and is a confident selection. He had the third 8l back when scoring at Thirsk last time and Megan Carberry looks a significant booking for the Staffordshire yard of Jennie Candlish.
At Carlisle this evening Muhawalah (7.40) drops back in trip having finished runner up at Lingfield over 10f last time and connections will be keen to get a 1 next to her name. She does carry her head a bit high and has plenty of aids (hood and blinkers) but she deserves to win a race although the newcomer Lady Bingo is certainly bred for the job.
Sir Mark Prescott's filly cost $250,000 as a yearling but has obviously had her training problems. The market will provide valuable clues as to how much ability she has inherited and she won't have to be anything out of the ordinary to make a winning start to her career.
At Bangor I am sweet on the chances of Sublime Talent (7.30) stepping back up to 2m 4f on fast ground having jumped well at Worcester last time over the minimum trip reverting to fences after a period over timber. Conor Ring takes off 7lbs and there is no question he is well handicapped from a mark 5lbs lower than his last winning mark and whilst he has never won over this trip he looked to be crying out for an additional half-mile last time.
Irish raider Maddoxtown and recent Hexham winner Mister Wall Street (6lb higher) look the obvious dangers but I hope to see a Welsh trained winner for Evan Williams although his yard have been quiet by their own high standards of late.
The same connections have every chance of following up 30-minutes later courtesy of Zama Zama visored for the first time and likely to be ridden prominently back at the minimum trip. Preference, however, is for last year's winner Maizy Missile (8.00) 6lb higher than when landing the corresponding event 12-months ago and the mare looks as if she has been laid out for a repeat success.
Long Wave is likely to be all the age in Southwell's opener but the Charlie Longsdon horses aren't exactly firing at present and Best Boy Barney (2.15) has won two of his last three for Jeremy Scott and might be hard to pass although he is not guaranteed to get it all his own way up front with Clondaw Hero and Next Exit in the field.
